“RESPECT. WALK. Are you talkin’ to me?” – Pantera, “Walk”

Ten years ago. A full decade. And it doesn’t even seem possible.

For those of you who don’t know what I am talking about, it was ten years ago (the 8th of December 2004) where guitarist Darrell “Dimebag” Abbott was playing a show in Columbus, Ohio and was senselessly and violently murdered, along with three other people.

One man who brought down one of the world’s best heavy metal musicians with violence on his mind. And now ten years later, it feels like a blur, like a cloud, and almost an impossibility!

The fairly new band, Damageplan, was playing at Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio. And from the beginning of the show, tragedy struck as Nathan Gale approached and shot Dimebag three times in the head. at nearly point blank range. The third shot killing him instantly.

The weapon similar used by Gale in his murderous rampage.

Gale is alleged to have been a fan of the band Pantera who had disbanded. And he was angry for the break up. It was also alleged that Gale had issues within and that night, he was NOT on his medication. But to that report or theory there is no evidence or proof.

At 10:18 PM, local time, calls came in of “Shots fired” and one officer did respond to the call. He would be the only one that would answer the call and face the gunman.

From the point where he entered, the gunman was facing away while holding a man hostage.

The weapon similar of the one that killed Gale and ended the tragedy in Columbus, Ohio.

The officer came in and saw Gale pull the gun up to the head of the hostage. It was at that time the officer took his own weapon and fired once, pretty much blowing off Gale’s head from behind. He never saw it coming.

One shot and it was over but many other people already laid dead.

The world of heavy metal music would never be the same.

So where was I?

I was living in a bit of self-made misery in what I call either the “House of Shame” or the “House of Pot” whichever you’d like.

At the time, living with a couple of other young adults like myself with their own physical disabilities. I was outside the FOLLOWING morning not knowing the news about anything. Hell, I didn’t even know at that point that Pantera was done. I was anticipating a reunion, and patiently awaiting the news of such when the house telephone rang. dime

I was outside in the morning fresh air, playing a bit of required catch with the family dog in the backyard.

Being that I was the only one at home at the time, I struggled to quickly get back inside of the house. Finally I answered and it was a woman calling for my roommates. A female who sounded like she just had her soul crushed. Full of tears, unable to speak, sniffling and coughing and crying over the phone.

By the time I got the pertinent information out of her, shock ran throughout my entire body. Dimebag Darrell was DEAD. I started shaking with disbelief. My voice was stolen from me and I could not respond back to the woman on the other end of the line when she was asking questions as to the whereabouts of her friends, my roommates.

I’ll never forget the sound of her voice filled with grief and disbelief. It haunts me even ten years later to think of that morning after. dimebagdarrell

In my opinion, Pantera was the band that brought back metal music back away from obscurity and set itself far apart from the grunge movement that was blazing a trail. Pantera was the band that stood up to all of that. But Pantera after twenty-plus years would never return to make that reunion. The band broke apart and then the murder of Dimebag Darrell.

But I know that other people who know what the heck I am talking about also have marked this day in their minds in their own very personal ways. Along with the anniversary death of John Lennon. Same day, many years apart.

Two talented men, brought down. The wasteful shame.

Rest in Peace, Darell Abbott.
Be at rest, John Lennon

“When life knocks you down, try to land on your back. Because if you can look up, you can get up. Let your reason get you back up.”~ Les Brown

I had the right of away, you fucking moron.

Somewhere in between 11 AM and 12 PM, I was crossing the street getting errands done because I knew that in a few hours from then I was planning to see FEAR CONTROL at Dirty Dog Bar.

But no, someone almost ruins it.

And before anyone goes into a panic and starts to text me, call me, message or e-mail me to ask if I am okay…. don’t do it, because I am just fine.

It was the other guy who has a worse fate ahead than I do.

The image included in this post was taken from a news article where the truck actually struck someone in a wheelchair and that person did die. But here I am at home, writing this story. I apologize in advance if this causes anyone to be startled. But there are some massive jerkwads out there.

While inside some very clear and specific painted lines within a crosswalk, I started to feel this super massive nudge and push from behind. But it was sudden and more like a jolt to the point where the wheelchair was only on two wheels to one side. I knew that I was going to go down. So instead of going down like a victim, I dropped out of the wheelchair, hit the pavement and rolled like a boss until I stopped, landing on my back.

What the hell?!?!?!?!?!???? Norco 10-325

My wheelchair had simply collapsed on itself, as it is designed to do when you want to store it somewhere or put it in the back seat or the trunk of a vehicle. The brand new wheelchair that I got from someone’s kindness took its first major hit and came out CLEAN.

I have some scrapes along my back and shoulders but I am fine. Nothing broken. Not even a bruise. But you know how they always tell you that you’re going to hurt the next day? Yep….. its the next day and I hurt.

HYDROCODONE BITARTRATE  TO THE RESCUE!!!!

By the way, did I tell you how beautiful you look today and that I love you so much?

Yeah its the effects of me being on that particular prescription. Fabulous!!!

So as I laid there, looking up at the utility wires overhead I attempted to at least sit up. I didn’t know if I should move at all because of the fact that I landed on my back. What if it was broken and if I moved… wouldn’t it make it worse?

Instead I turned my head towards the pile of vehicular debris, and the guy responsible for this collision stepped out of his pick up truck and looked around to assess the damage.

He started screaming about how he just bought it and all that and didn’t even look to see where I was. He just went on and on about how much he had paid for his truck. I mean honestly, he did not even bother to see if I was dead or alive or anything else. But the person driving behind him sure did. They came running to see if I was respond to their voice.

Hmmm, amazing how a standard run-of-the-mill wheelchair which would retail about $200 would knock out an acclaimed $30,000 dual cab pick up truck.

Like I said, the wheelchair just collapsed, but this guy’s bumper and grill got a little more smashed in than what I did.

Someone asked me what my blood type was this morning. I answered “BAMF.”

I think that it was the fact that I knew that I was going to fall and there was nothing I could do about it that kept me from sustaining serious injuries. Yes, I loaded up on Norco as I went to see FEAR CONTROL, but I didn’t bother doing anything out of the ordinary to make things worse.

The one sure thing that was a surprise was that the guy who was responsible for this happening actually stayed!! He could have drove off a little angry with his front sustaining more damage than I did, but he stayed. And unfortunately for him, he got super mouthy at the police officers as I was being attended to by members of EMS/EMT.

The pick up truck was towed. And its driver hauled off to jail. And I have a lot to think about as to whether or not to sue this guy for every penny he’s got for what he did. I just know that right now (or at that time) he was in jail. Who really knows for what though!!!!!

I do not think that I am Superman. I do think that the way things turned out that I was very fortunate as it could have been so much worse. This is the second time I’ve taken out a vehicle. The first time being a luxury German automobile.

But I went, and I rocked out with FEAR CONTROL until I could rock no more and still walked away like a bad ass. So yes, I have established my title as a BAMF. Thank you, thank you very much.

The scene last night as it unfolded at SXSW.

Tragedy

Let’s get this out of the way. I know that it is still on the minds of everyone and I know that it caused a lot of people to contact me asking if I was okay or not when I woke up this morning.

SXSW Festival still plays on even though last night an alleged drunk driver was trying to evade police, smashed through a barricade that was separating traffic from hundreds of music lovers and other festival goers and ultimately this driver killed two people, injured more than twenty others before blasting into a taxi and then being tasered by officers as he tried to flee the scene.

Details are still all over the place as now I have heard three different versions in the past 12 hours of what exactly happened. I’ll leave that up for police to decide.

I am personally safe and sound. And I didn’t even know that this had happened until I woke up this morning. I had no clue that this tragic event took place.

Yes I have been visiting downtown Austin to see live music. Mainly to watch BEAUTIFUL DISTURBANCE, Poc Nation, Nancy Silva Project… and the rest of this week into the weekend I still plan on seeing BEAUTIFUL DISTURBANCE one final time Friday evening, Resisting Vegas on Saturday and CASKET OF CASSANDRA Sunday afternoon. I’ve been busy since Tuesday.

And the party don’t stop!!

Last night was when I went to the Heart of Texas Rock Fest to see Nancy Silva Project at the “big stage” off of 7th Street and Neches. I was going to write more about my battle with the evil and wicked 8th Street and I had more to talk about with other performances by BEAUTIFUL DISTURBANCE. But that’s going to have to wait until I am able to get this one posted.

And what is really pulling at my heart this day is the fact that this took place at a venue called Mohawk located on Red River. And it is not that far from where hundreds of people are standing at Heart of Texas Rock Fest. map20

Let me give you an idea of how close this is and how this high speed chase could have been a lot more dangerous had it reached Heart of Texas Rock Fest areas.

Point A is the parking lot that right now holds the big stage.

Point B is the location of Mohawk.

It started at Mohawk and actually ended around 9th Street.

I was there before it got dark. And left promptly after Nancy Silva Project got off stage and I had photos taken with Nancy Silva.

I was actually off this map to the south and to the west on 4th Street and I boarded a city bus to return home sometime around 10:30 PM. This accident happened two hours later. Interstate 35 that runs through can be seen by the large orange line on the right side of the map.

So I am in fact safe. And I went out to Shiner’s Saloon this afternoon to watch BEAUTIFUL DISTURBANCE again. I am damned glad that I did too.

My prayers go to everyone hurt and/or involved in this tragedy that should have NEVER happened. A lot of emotions are still running high.

A band even sang a song today about a car crash and then deeply regretted it at Shiner’s Saloon.

But to think about all of this and put it into perspective, its scary to know that I was that close to tragedy and pain. And even death.

I did however needed to take the time to write this blog post and let those people who don’t know what is going on that I am okay and safe.

Thank you to everyone. And on a personal and different note, I am about to reach 120,000 total views on this blog. Thank you again to all!!!!

The show must go on.

Now on to my reviews and my crazy life.

“Love and compassion are necessities, not luxuries. Without them humanity cannot survive.”~ Dalai Lama

Its been a very difficult week for the United States of America. So many tragedies happening. Not too long after the Boston Marathon bombing came the news of a fertilizer plant that exploded in a small town called West, Texas.

West, Texas is just a few miles north of Waco, Texas.

It is a very sad story to hear and there is going to be a very difficult uphill battle for the town and its citizens.

Many people in Texas were horrified upon hearing the news. And even a full day later after the explosion, officials are not given any information on casualties and/or deaths.

This story broke nationwide for sure.

And throughout the pandemonium  hearing different stories that were actually never official that maybe up to 60 people had died in this explosion. Even early this morning there was a possible death toll of 5-15 people. But again, nobody is talking about those kinds of numbers. There are however, first responders and firefighters who missing at this hour.

After reading countless posts on Facebook about this tragedy closer to home, we enter the people whom I have given this month’s Compassion Award.

Brenda Flores, Auggie Del Ray

The band that I have recently been writing about, BEAUTIFUL DISTURBANCE, who comes originally from Waco, Texas had many compassionate posts by its members. Auggie Del Ray and Brenda Flores.

Just hours after the news had broke about this story, Auggie Del Ray was so moved that he decided that he wanted to do something for the people of West, Texas who were suffering.

The story last night was that many of the citizens were being evacuated and more or less left homeless until fires at the plant could be contained and the threat was diminished.

Auggie Del Ray in an act of selflessness, posted on his personal Facebook profile that HIS home would be open to those who were being displaced and evacuated.

He also was encouraging for those who could help to do so. No matter if it meant donating money or blood.

Then this afternoon, BEAUTIFUL DISTURBANCE came together as the family that they are, and now are going to give 100% of the proceeds of the band’s merchandise sold on the 18th and 19th of April to the victims of West, Texas.

Any kind of merchandise that you can find on their website, ALL the money will be donated!!!

It was very awesome gesture on behalf of Auggie, Brenda, and the rest of the band. And it floored me that they were so very willing to do this.

These kinds of tragedies will only be overcome by people willing to donate. Usually this means a lot of money for the restoration and rebuilding of what was lost, which was a lot!!!

So go ahead and buy yourself a t-shirt, some posters, a wristband, whatever you like. And do so knowing that your purchases will go towards the hurting victims of this disaster.
